Following an incident over the weekend that saw a dog and their owner fall through the ice at Lake Margaret, the St. Thomas Fire Department want to remind the community about ice safety.
Fire Prevention Officer Kim Destun says that both the owner and dog were extremely lucky after the owner crawled out onto the ice to save his dog who had run onto the lake and fallen through.
Destun says the while the ice was clearly not frozen enough to sustain weight, they stress that no ice should ever be considered safe.
She says that while it is not an encouraged activity, it is important that if you do go out onto the ice, to have someone with you that can call for help if something bad were to happen.
Destun adds that if someone does fall through the ice, do not go out and help them.
Destun says that they are always here to help and to please give them a call , even if it’s for a furry friend.
