As of today, the St. Thomas Elgin Food Bank will begin operating out of their new temporary home at the Royal Canadian Legion in St. Thomas.
The move follows the need for more space at the food bank and the lack of revenue coming into the legion, explains General Manager of the St. Thomas Elgin Food Bank Karen McDade.
McDade says the move is bittersweet as they will miss their old space.
A new permanent home for the Food Bank is expected to be built into a new development planned for 2023.
The new building would be situated in the north west corner of Ross Street and Centre Street, and would also contain 48 affordable, supportive housing units, as part of the city’s Compassionate Community partnership with Indwell.
Those needing to utilize the St. Thomas Elgin Food Bank can still contact them via their helpline at 519-878-3663.
The Royal Canadian Legion Lord Elgin Branch 41 is located at 24 John Street St. Thomas.
