As announced earlier this afternoon by education minister Stephen Lecce, April is the new March break this year for teachers and students in the province. Lecce says it’s critical to avoid a repeat of the spike in youth-related COVID-19 cases that occurred over the winter break. He adds the province continues to advise residents not to travel given the increase in new variants.
Lecce went on to say, “We appreciate the hard work of students and staff in the education sector and I want to be clear: March break is being postponed, not cancelled. To keep schools open, we must keep them free of COVID-19. The actions announced today serve to limit opportunities for congregation – while reaffirming the evidence that schools are safe for students.”
He adds, “By continuing to follow public health advice, and by introducing additional safety measures and more testing, we are supporting our collective efforts to keep COVID-19 from entering our schools.”
In a statement from the Thames Valley District School Board, Education Director Mark Fisher notes “The well-being of staff, students and their families is a key priority for our board.”
The Thames Valley Board adds further details will be provided to students and parents as soon as they become available.
