It was a surprise birthday party this tween will remember for the rest of her life. A drive-by cavalcade Saturday afternoon featuring the St. Thomas Jeepers, multiple St. Thomas police cars, a St. Thomas Fire Department truck and car loads of friends and neighbours on Simcoe Street. All with horns honking, sirens blaring and lights flashing to wish Lexi Jewel the very best 12th birthday.
Sadly, there is a bittersweet side to her 12th birthday. Her mom Sherri, who has three other children, has been diagnosed with small cell lung cancer that has spread through her bones. This very likely will be the last birthday they will celebrate together.
There were baskets full of gifts. And if Lexi could possibly – and she couldn’t – hold all the balloons given to her, why she would have floated skyward.
A forever moment for her and her mom.
Thanks to neighbour Michelle Grech and her son Nicholas, this very noisy birthday bash – in a coronavirus world no less – came together without a hitch and right on time. Complete with cake and a sprawling lawn sign befitting the beautiful 12-year-old, courtesy of none other than Dotsy the Clown.
Lexi loves to ride horses and Full Circle Ranch on Mapleton Line north of St. Thomas has started a gofundme page to help financially support the family.
“All I want is to go with no worries that they are all going to be fine, that they will receive all the help they need,” says Sherri.
Part of the money raised is to create a school fund for Lexi.
