A major blaze yesterday afternoon north of Talbotville blanketed the area in thick black smoke visible for miles. It broke out in the shop area of the Flying M Truck Stop just after 3 p.m. London Fire Department platoon chief Colin Shewell says the call went out for mutual aid to provide tanker trucks to fight the stubborn blaze.
The blaze broke out around 3 p.m. and at its peak had about 50 firefighters on the scene. Shewell says crews were on scene until 11 p.m.
The damage estimate will be well in excess of $500,000. However, Shewell notes the value of the property saved is a key consideration. Parked next to the fire scene were a number of new commercial trucks, none of which he believes were damaged.
He adds the fire was contained to the footprint of the building and there were no injuries. The cause is not deemed suspicious at this time.
