With more than 640 people across the province in hospital ICU’s, St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital is preparing for any eventuality.
The hospital announced that it could include the transferring of medical or critical care patients to the facility to manage pressures on ICUs in harder hit areas of the province.
Patients with planned appointments at STEGH are unaffected unless they receive a call directly from the hospital.
Administration calls it a system approach to care delivery with hospitals in the region and across the province to ensure everyone has access to care when they need.
Adding, “safety is our top priority and we continue with enhanced infection prevention and control measures.”
A field hospital at Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital is expected to start taking patients in the coming weeks.
The Ontario government says it’s one of two such sites meant to help handle growing capacity issues in hospitals due to COVID-19.
The province set new records this week with the number of patients hospitalized and in intensive care units because of the virus.
