The Special Investigations Unit has terminated an investigation into an incident last month in St. Thomas where a 20 year old man was injured while lodged in a cell.
On March 16th, the man attended the St. Thomas Police Station where he began consuming alcohol while in the lobby and refused to leave the premises.
The male was subsequently arrested and lodged in a cell, where he was captured on video surveillance, falling and hitting his head against the concrete wall.
He was then transported to hospital where subsequent imaging ruled out the man had suffered a brain hemorrhage.
SIU Director Joseph Martino has said because the man did not suffer a “serious injury” within the mandate of the province’s police watchdog, the unit is without statutory jurisdiction in this case and the file is closed.
