They may be tiny in size but they offer large-size hope in the form of quality, energy efficient supportive affordable housing to St. Thomas. Announced Monday at city council, Project Tiny Hope will consist of a cluster of tiny homes and a low-rise apartment at 21 Kains Street, the former home of Elgin Handles. One of the partners is St. Thomas developer Doug Tarry.
Doug Tarry Limited contributed $280,000 for cleanup of the brownfield site which is expected to begin later this year. Other partners include the YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin and Sanctuary Homes.
The latter donated $200,000 to purchase the lot. Remediation work will begin in the near future and Doug Tarry explains the construction process.
Lindsay Rice of the YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin describes the community that will soon blossom at 21 Kains Street.
She adds, the development will incorporate green space and a community garden into the community.
Rice outlines the composition of the tiny homes and the apartment units.
Transformation of the brownfield site will begin shortly, advises Rice.
Doug Tarry Homes is challenging the community to contribute to the capital campaign fund in order to reach the goal of raising $1.5 million toward the construction costs.
