The province is reporting 3,166 new COVID-19 cases this morning with 23 deaths while Southwestern Public Health is reporting 19 new cases with 14 resolved. There are five new cases in St. Thomas, three in Aylmer, two in Central Elgin and one in West Elgin.
The death toll remains at 76 since the pandemic began.
Five hundred and forty-six of the confirmed cases involve variants of concern, with 88 cases still active.
There are 122 ongoing cases in the health unit’s coverage area with 30 in Tillsonburg, 28 in St. Thomas, 25 in Woodstock, seven in Aylmer and Norwich, five in East Zorra-Tavistock and Ingersoll, four in Bayham, three in Central Elgin and West Elgin two in SW Oxford and Blandford-Blenheim and one in Dutton-Dunwich
Four residents and five staff member have tested positive at Caressant Care in Woodstock along with seven patients and four staff at Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital.
Fifteen individuals are hospitalized, six of those in ICU. Of the cases hospitalized since the pandemic began, 34.3 per cent were admitted to the ICU.
Sixty-nine of the cases are individuals under the age of 50, of those 18 are under the age of 20.
The number of resolved cases is 3,311.
Through May 1 – the latest data available from the health unit – 54,861 individuals have been vaccinated by SWPH, with 52,594 of those having received their first dose.
There are 57.7 ongoing confirmed cases per 100,000 population in the SWPH region as compared to 178.3 per 100,000 in the Middlesex-London Health Unit region. The crude rate for St. Thomas is 72.0 cases per 100,000 population and Aylmer has 93.4 cases per 100,000.
The assessment centre at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital undertook 199 tests on Wednesday. The West Elgin Community Health Centre did 39 on Wednesday.
