Local parents Chris and Mallory know first hand about the struggles families face when a child is diagnosed with Plagiocephaly, especially the financial burden.
Plagiocephaly, also known as Flat Head Syndrome, is characterized by unusual flattening of the head and is largely as a result of sleep recommendations given to parents to have children sleep on their backs.
When their son Atlas was 5 months old, he was diagnosed with the condition and was prescribed to wear a Cranial Remolding Orthosis (helmet) to help reshape the skull and realign the ears. Unfortunately, these devices are not covered by OHIP and the full cost of these helmets are $2,600.00.
Mallory Hawley-Landrigan says thankfully they were able to cover most of the costs through insurance, but not everyone is that lucky.
The couple is now raising funds throughout the month of May to support families who cannot cover the costs of these helmets themselves.
Chris Coats says because this is a condition that should not go untreated, they wanted to do anything they could to support those dealing with the same diagnosis they received.
He adds that they hope to raise enough funds to purchase at least 2 helmets.
Custom Orthotics of London will then work with families in the St. Thomas, Elgin and Middlesex area that are in need of funding.
