Following a post to social media asking residents to avoid the Elm Street area as a result of a collision Tuesday, the St. Thomas Police say the province’s Special Investigations Unit is now involved in the incident.
Police say on May 11th shortly after 3 p.m., officers were involved with an individual wanted on an outstanding warrant on Elm at Meehan Street.
During the interaction, the individual sustained an injury and was transported to hospital where he was later released.
STP immediately notified the SIU, who will now investigate as per their mandate.
In a release from the SIU, they say a 37 year old man sustained serious injury when a collision between the man, who was riding a bicycle, and a police cruiser occurred.
“A St. Thomas Police Service officer was operating his cruiser when he observed a 37-year-old man riding a bicycle on the sidewalk on Elm Street. As the man was wanted on a warrant, the officer attempted to get the man’s attention.
In the area of Elm Street and Hepburn Avenue, there was a collision between the bicycle and cruiser. The man was transported to hospital for treatment of a serious injury.”
The SIU says that three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
They are also urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
