Ontario’s top doctor is giving hospitals the green light to gradually resume non-urgent surgeries.
Dr. David Williams says daily COVID-19 rates, hospitalizations and intensive care admissions appear to be trending lower in Ontario.
In the most recent numbers reported Wednesday, Ontario currently has 1,401 people hospitalized with COVID-19. In addition, 735 patients are in intensive care and 539 patients a ventilators.
But a spokeswoman for Health Minister Christine Elliott’s says the resumption won’t be immediate across the province and is dependent on hospital capacity.
It’s expected to take more than three years to clear Ontario’s surgical backlog.
