The province is reporting 1,890 new COVID-19 cases this morning with 27 deaths while Southwestern Public Health is reporting 15 new cases with 13 resolved. There were two new cases in St. Thomas and one in West Elgin.
The death total remains at 79 since the pandemic began.
Seven hundred and twenty of the confirmed cases involve variants of concern, with 88 cases still active.
There are 104 ongoing cases in the health unit’s coverage area with 40 in Woodstock, 17 in Tillsonburg, 12 in St. Thomas, eight in Zorra, six in Norwich, five in Blandford-Blenheim, four in Aylmer, three in Central Elgin and West Elgin, two in Bayham and SW Oxford and one in East Zorra-Tavistock and Ingersoll.
Fourteen patients and five staff at Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital have tested positive.
Nine individuals are hospitalized, five of those in ICU. Of the cases hospitalized since the pandemic began, 34 per cent were admitted to the ICU.
Sixty-seven of the cases are individuals under the age of 50, of those 23 are under the age of 20.
The number of resolved cases is 3,531.
Through May 15 – the latest data available from the health unit – 75,780 individuals have been vaccinated by SWPH, with 73,226 of those having received their first dose.
There are 49.2 ongoing confirmed cases per 100,000 population in the SWPH region as compared to 122.2 per 100,000 in the Middlesex-London Health Unit region. The crude rate for St. Thomas is 30.8 cases per 100,000 population and Aylmer has 53.4 cases per 100,000.
The assessment centre at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital undertook 129 tests on Wednesday. The West Elgin Community Health Centre did 17 on Wednesday.
