Premier Doug Ford has written to more than 50 public health agencies, hospitals and teachers’ unions seeking input on whether it’s safe to re-open schools.
Ford says in the letter that his government understands the benefits of having students return to class for the last month of the academic year.
During a Southwestern Public Health COVID-19 briefing Wednesday, medical officer of health Dr. Joyce Lock suggested the health unit would like to see students back in school.
However, Ford he says the impact of COVID-19 variants and relatively low rates of vaccinated teachers and students raise serious concerns about reopening schools prior to the summer break.
Premier Doug Ford is expected to provide an update on the province’s COVID-19 vaccination plan this morning.
