The re-opening of the King George VI lift bridge in Port Stanley has been delayed once again. It was scheduled to open tomorrow (Friday) but that has been delayed for up to 2 weeks.
Commissioning and testing have identified adjustments that must be made to the bridge’s mechanical, electrical and control systems before it can safely re-open.
Elgin County Warden Tom Marks noted, “Like all Port Stanley residents, I am eager to see the lift bridge reopen to the public; however, ensuring the structure is in a safe condition before reopening is of utmost importance to county council, even if it does take a little bit longer.”
It was hoped the work would be completed in May. The $5.8 million project is expected to extend the service life of the bridge – constructed in 1938 – for approximately 25 years.
