With the school year now over, the Ontario Government is giving families the chance to spend some time enjoying the great outdoors with free fishing across the province.
From July 3rd to 11th, Ontarians can enjoy free fishing province-wide without having to purchase a licence or carry an Outdoors Card.
Mike Melnik from the Canadian Sportfishing Industry Association says is a great chance to try it for the first time.
Melnik says while it is a tradition for many, it also gives back to the economy.
He says that going through the license process can deter people from trying fishing, which is why these weeks are important for many.
Melnik adds that there’s three other free fishing weeks scattered throughout the year in Ontario, encouraging people to try it year round.
The province does remind families that take part in these activities to respect the regulations under Step 2 of the Roadmap to Reopen and to help keep recreational fisheries healthy by following all other fishing regulations.
