With the stroke of a pen, a corridor of land in Aylmer and Malahide has been opened up for new development. Tuesday morning at the Elgin County administration building, MPP Jeff Yurek announced the long-awaited removal of the Hwy. 3 bypass designation, in place since 1970 stretching from Centennial Avenue to just east of Aylmer.
Aylmer councillor Pete Barbour noted the designation has greatly restricted development in the affected areas.
Yurek pointed out by freeing up the land, it will result in jobs and increased tax assessment for the municipalities. And now that the designation has been lifted, municipalities can begin the planning process to attract new development.
Elgin County Warden Tom Marks added, “I am excited to see what economic development opportunities have now been made possible for our area.”
