Six million free menstrual products will be doled out to Ontario schools each year as part of a new project to fight period poverty.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce made the announcement this morning, saying menstrual products are a necessity, not a luxury.
He says sanitary pads will be given to school boards, which will then decide how they are distributed to local schools.
The program is a partnership between the province and Shoppers Drug Mart, which will benefit students who need menstrual products and are unable to afford or access them, resulting in an inability to participate in school and other activities.
