The Strathroy Rockets rode a two-goal Riley Wood performance Saturday night en route to a 4-2 victory over the visiting St. Thomas Stars at the West Middlesex Memorial Centre.
The two points lifts the Rockets over St. Thomas and out of the basement in the GOJHL standings.
The Stars came out of the gate quickly, taking the lead three minutes after the opening whistle on Nick Houben’s third goal of the season.
But a trio of goals – including Wood’s two tallies – proved too much for St. Thomas to overcome.
Maddox Amaral’s sixth goal of the season with a couple of minutes to play in the third cut Strathroy’s lead to a single goal.
However, Carson Perry’s first goal of the season 30 second later spelled goodbye to any hopes of a Stars’ comeback.
Owen Willmore faced 31 shots in net for the Stars. The St. Thomas native now sports a 4.24 GAA.
The Stars return to action Thursday when they travel to Leamington to face the Flyers. The game will be broadcast live on myFM beginning at 7 p.m.
