Ontario is set to introduce legislation that would require temp agencies and recruiters to be licensed.
Minister of Labour, Training & Skills Development Monte McNaughton says inspections over the past 2 years have found multiple temporary help agencies that are paying people below minimum wage and denying basic employment rights.
McNaughton says under the proposed legislation, the agencies and recruiters would would be vetted before being issued a licence.
The province is planning to hire a team of officers that will focus on cracking down on the sector, particularly those exploiting foreign workers.
At this time, there are more than 3,000 agencies across the province.
