During a subdued commemoration Monday on the steps of city hall in St. Thomas, two dozen member of the Coalition to End Poverty recognized the pressing need to eradicate economic hardship.
As Mayor Joe Preston noted, more than 12,500 people in the region are living below the poverty line.
The coalition has identified four priorities to begin working on: accessible and affordable transportation, food security, income security and safe and affordable housing.
Preston added we all have a role to play in eradicating poverty.
The event was held in honour of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, which took place on Sunday.
