In spite of the short turnaround between games, the Stars skated away with a couple of weekend wins and four valuable points, culminating in a well-earned 4-2 victory this afternoon (Saturday) in Chatham.
St. Thomas jumped out of the gate quickly against the fourth-place Maroons getting goals from Mathieu Paris and Nick Houben in the opening 15 minutes and never surrendered the lead. Jackson Dobbin assisted on both tallies.
Lucas Fancy cut the Stars’ lead in half midway through the second period only to have Jack Weber (pictured) cash in on a shorthanded goal three minutes later to restore St. Thomas’ two-goal lead.
That plot line was repeated in the final frame with Fancy pulling Chatham to within a goal three minutes in only to have Weber add the insurance marker on a power-play. His second straight two-goal outing.
As was the case Friday night in the Stars’ 5-2 win over Sarnia, St. Thomas badly outshot Chatham 54-42, including 23-10 in the opening 20 minutes.
Owen Willmore picked up his second win of the season in net for the Stars.
With the win, St. Thomas pulls ahead of Sarnia and Strathroy into seventh place with a game in hand on both teams. Strathroy dropped a 5-3 decision to Leamington Saturday evening.
The Stars return to action Wednesday when they play the Vipers in LaSalle. Game time is 7 p.m. and you can catch all the action with Chris Soares on myFM.
