Defenceman Trent Ballentyne (pictured at left) potted the only goal in the shootout to power St. Thomas to an exciting 4-3 win over Chatham tonight at the Joe Thornton Community Centre.
It was a solid effort from the Stars who twice held the lead in the opening period, only to have Chatham pull even.
In a turn of events, it was Nick Houben’s seventh goal of the season at the 7:22 mark of the third period that forced the overtime after the Maroons had taken a 3-2 lead on a Cameron Graham goal early in the middle frame.
Tyler Alexanader with his first goal of the season three minutes into the game and Tanner Dietz with his third had Chatham playing catch-up in the early going.
Ben MacRobbie assisted on both.
Owen Willmore earned the win, stopping 33 of 36 shots. It’s his third win and second against he Maroons in a two-week span.
The Stars remain three points behind sixth-place St. Marys who, likewise, pulled off a 4-3 shootout win over London tonight.
Belmont’s Noah Vandenbrink netted his seventh goal of the campaign for the Lincolns.
