The 6th annual Smiles for Seniors Gift Drive is officially underway across Elgin County and the need for donations is greater now more than ever.
Bill Marlatt explains that he and his wife Sherry began collecting gifts for seniors in retirement homes throughout Elgin County over 6 years ago, as a way to bring some joy to the residents during Christmas time.
The local initiative that began on a smaller scale, looking after 2-3 homes, now supplies roughly 8 long term care homes across the county with Christmas gifts for their residents.
Marlatt says it is largely due to the incredible community support.
He says that for the seniors, these gifts mean more than you will ever know.
Marlatt adds that unfortunately for many of these seniors, it may be the only gift they receive on Christmas.
Much needed donations include items such as socks with grips, slippers, adult colouring books, large print books, games, and puzzles, as well as many toiletry items such as unscented roll on deodorant and lotion.
They will also be accepting gift card and cash donations that will then be used to purchased some needed items towards the end of the campaign.
Those wishing to make a donation to help put a smile on a senior’s face this holiday season can do so by dropping gifts off at one of the following locations by December 15th.
