While no one was injured, a garage/workshop fire on Light Line Friday morning in Bayham claimed the lives of nine puppies.
Bayham firefighters responded to the fire north of Vienna around 7:45 with smoke visible from the roof when they arrived.
The mother and her pups were inside and it was feared a young child was also inside the structure.
The youngster was found at a neighbour’s house and firefighters rescued the dog, however her pups succumbed to smoke inhalation.
The fire is not considered suspicious and was limited mainly to the rear wall of the structure. Damage is estimated at $20,000 with no value yet on the contents inside.
It is believed improper storage of ash from a wood stove ignited a box.
The Bayham Fire Department would like to remind everyone all ash, even if thought to be cold, should be stored in a metal container – preferably with a lid.
