It was time spent remembering and reflecting on the horrific act that took place all those years ago at Ecole Polytechnique, where 14 young women lost their lives in an act of gender-based violence.
On National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, which took place Monday, members of the community gathered at the Columbus Club in St. Thomas to pay respect and honour the lives lost that day.
The event, organized by the team at St. Thomas-Elgin Second Stage Housing was not only meant to remember the lives lost, but to help bring action noted Executive Director Mickie Keefer.
A number of organizations were represented at the ceremony, including Violence Against Women Services Elgin County, Victim Services Elgin, YWCA St. Thomas- Elgin, St. Thomas Police, Aylmer Police, Elgin OPP among others.
Keefer says it was great to see all sides come together for such an important issue.
14 white roses were laid before the crowd to honour the 14 women whos lives were taken to soon in an act of gender-based violence.
