A new program geared towards supporting youth entrepreneurship is coming to St. Thomas-Elgin in 2022.
Thanks to a partnership between the Small Business Enterprise Centre and the IGNITE Youth Centre, “Side Gig” was created for those between the ages of 15 and 29, who want to start and run their own business by providing training, advice and up to $1000 in grant funding.
Business Advisor with the SBEC and Side Gig Program Coordinator, Elle Crevits explains further.
With Side Gig open to residents of both St. Thomas and Elgin County, Crevits notes the importance of the program in our small and rural communities.
Applicants for the program must be 15 to 29 years old, currently living in St. Thomas or Elgin, starting up a new business as well as working or in school, part or full time.
Those hoping to apply, must submit an expression of interest by January 2nd at midnight.
Crevits says that finalists will then be chosen for the program, which kicks off in February.
Participants will need to commit to:
• Working on their business a minimum of 15 hours per week for the duration of the program
• Must attend all training sessions (February 7, 8, 14 and 15 from 3-4:30 PM online)
• Meet with business advisor bi-weekly for duration of the program
• Attend 2 mentorship events (dates TBD)
• Provide monthly financial updates for the duration of the program
