53 programs at 40 social services agencies across Elgin-Middlesex are set to receive some much needed funding thanks to the United Way.
Kelly Ziegner, President and CEO of the United Way Elgin Middlesex notes $4.65 million is being invested locally thanks to the Community Fund Program.
Locally, Ziegner breaks down the donations for St. Thomas-Elgin.
Ziegner notes fund allocations in the area saw a large focus on housing and basic needs for residents.
She adds the need for support continues to be great as applications received were in excess of $14 million, with $4.65 million given out to the most urgent needs programs.
Specific St. Thomas-Elgin allocations include…
$66,410 to the YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin to support housing stability and homelessness prevention supports and services for youth and adults.
$9,000 to the West Elgin Community Health Centre to supply no-cost rides to essential medical and other appointments for rural residents with low income and/or no access to transportation.
$75,000 to the The Inn to support basic needs, advocacy & other supports for individuals experiencing homelessness.
$55,000 to St. Thomas-Elgin Second Stage Transitional Residence to support counselling for children residing at St. Thomas-Elgin Second Stage Housing.
$10,000 to Mennonite Community Services of Southern Ontario to support health, life skills, and English language classes for newcomer women, and pre-school readiness for children. An additional $13,000 will also provide no-cost rides to essential medical and other appointments for rural residents with low income and/or no access to transportation.
$22,000 to the Elgin-St. Thomas Youth Employment Counselling Centre (Ignite Youth Centre) to provide social, education and employment support programs for youth aged 12-19.
$20,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters St. Thomas Elgin to support one on one mentoring with a screened, trained adult volunteer for children and youth identified as at-risk.
