A repurposed ambulance full of ice cream will be popping up at events throughout Elgin County this summer, largely thanks to the winning “Pitch” from Markus Hawco at the Ice Box.
Hawco was one of five finalists for the Elgin Business Resource Centre’s 2022 “The Pitch”, a Dragons Den style event, as General Manager Kevin Jackson explains.
After a year and a half hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the EBRC was able to hold the event virtually, awarding $25,000 in cash and in-kind services notes Jackson.
Markus Hawco, owner of the Ice Box in St. Thomas was up against some big competition, including Raw for Pets, The Refillery at Simply Pure Water, Havi Electric and Dynamic Pump Solutions.
Ultimately, Hawco was named the winner for his plan to mobilize his business even further.
He explains his decision to go with a decommissioned ambulance.
Hawco adds that the new ice cream truck will allow them to expand service throughout Elgin County.
While the hunt for an ambulance is still on, graphic design work for the exterior is already underway. Hawco notes, that if all goes well with a look through on Saturday, the haul out will begin with a hopeful opening for the beginning of May.
