Smoke detectors are being credited in saving four people from serious injury or death in an early morning fire Monday on Sparta Line.
The blaze broke out around 5:30 a.m. at 43624 Sparta Line, just east of Fairview Road.
Central Elgin Fire Chief Ray Ormerod says the fire is believed to have started on the raised porch which was heavily damaged.
Firefighters from Central Elgin’s Union station initially responded to the scene and they were supplemented by crews from Port Stanley station and a tanker from Yarmouth Centre station.
Ormerod adds the fire is not being treated as suspicious.
Two occupants were treated in hospital for smoke inhalation while several pets escaped unharmed.
No damage estimate is available at this time.
