Another scam has hit the area, this time costing a resident $8700.
The St. Thomas Police note the complainant received an email from Microsoft alerting her that her computer had been hacked and to call a 1-866 number. The victim was then told that her bank account was hacked, resulting in a $10,250 loss.
The woman was instructed to withdraw all of her money for safety purposes and to to deposit the cash into a bitcoin ATM machine.
In addition, the woman was told to buy $2000 worth of Sephora and Google play gift cards.
As a result, the victim was scammed out of $8700. Police note that incident is still under investigation.
