Ontario’s Progressive Conservative government has introduced legislation that would cut provincial gas taxes by 5.7 cents a litre for six months starting after the June provincial election.
If passed, effective July 1st until December 31, 2022, the gas tax rate would be cut from 14.7 cents per litre to 9 cents per litre. The fuel tax rate, which includes diesel, would also be reduced from 14.3 cents per litre to 9 cents per litre, representing a cut of 5.3 cents per litre.
Premier Doug Ford says it’s time the government starts putting money back into the pockets of people who have been getting — quote — “gouged, day in and day out.”
Ford said last fall that he would only cut provincial gas taxes if the federal government did something similar. But he says gas prices then weren’t at current levels, and he is still encouraging Ottawa to implement a further cut.
