Kains Street residents were woken up by the smell of smoke and the sound of sirens Wednesday as two homes on the roadway were the victims of an early morning fire.
The St. Thomas Fire Department received at least five, 911 calls just before 3:30 a.m. about the house fire at 72 Kains, also impacting their neighbours at 74. All off duty firefighters were called back to assist, with crews able to contain the blaze fairly quickly notes Chief Fire Prevention Officer Kim Destun.
All individuals and family pets in both homes were able to make it out, resulting in no injuries. Destun notes that both homes did have working smoke alarms, with that being the key in their safe exits.
The damage estimate at this time for both homes sits around $900,000.
The investigation is still ongoing, with city police currently holding down the scene.
The roadway however has reopened to traffic.
