While at least one health unit in SW Ontario is sending out suspension notices to students over out-of-date immunization records, Southwestern Public Health is taking a more measured approach.
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has issued close to 8,000 suspension orders to students advising they have until Sept. 12 to update their immunization records.
Jaime Fletcher, health unit program manager explains thousands of reminder letters have been sent out to parents over the summer.
With in-class learning less than a month away, now is the time to ensure a student’s immunization records are up to date, especially for secondary school students.
Fletcher stresses the immunization records are for vaccine-preventable diseases and not COVID shots.
Ontario students between four and 17 years of age could face school suspension if they are not up to date on certain vaccinations.
Fletcher adds parents can book an appointment with the health unit to get students current with their immunization records.
