David Gregory has been permanently appointed as the City’s Fire Chief.
Gregory was previously appointed as the interim Fire Chief this past May, but the City announced Monday evening that they plan on making things official at next week’s Council meeting.
Chief Gregory has been a St. Thomas Fire Services member for 28 years, including being appointed Deputy Fire Chief in January of 2022. He was moved into the top spot on an interim basis in May after Kevin Welsh was removed from the chief’s role. Welsh came to St. Thomas from the Town of Renfrew in November of last year after Bob Davidson retired suddenly last July. The City did not disclose a reason for Welsh’s departure. Since the death of former Fire Chief Rob Broadbent in 2017, the Chief’s office has been a revolving door. The City says that Gregory’s recent leadership has brought “stability within the service area and boosted morale amongst team members.”
