The six SW Ontario grain elevators targetted for closure as Sollio Agriculture winds down its Ontario Grain operations did require additional reinvestment but they are of value.
The services offered to farmers are grain drying, cleaning and storage.
Sollio CEO Casper Kaastra told myFM the elevators, including the Talbotville operation, did not fit within the space the company occupies in grain commercial activity such as feed manufacturing.
Sollio is a majority shareholder in the Ontario Grain partnership with elevators in Lambton County, Essex County, Chatham-Kent, Wellington County, Oxford County in addition to Talbotville.
Kaastra advised they would be open to selling one or all of the elevators to an interested party.
He added area farmers may see the value in obtaining the elevators and operate them as a co-op. He says, “I think there is a strong interest in those assets for continued use as a grain commercial facility.”
