Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says his government is looking at its options to respond to Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s use of the Constitution’s notwithstanding clause.
Trudeau made the comment yesterday outside the Commons after NDP leader Jagmeet Singh called for more action from the federal government.
Last night, Trudeau says he spoke with Ford and emphasized the importance of standing up for Canadians’ rights and freedoms, including workers’ rights, and reiterated that the preemptive use of the notwithstanding clause is wrong and inappropriate.
Ford’s office says the premier told the prime minister that allowing education workers to strike would have an “unacceptable” effect on students after two years of disruptions due to the pandemic.
The union representing the 55-thousand affected educational workers in Ontario says it still plans to hold a strike on Friday despite looming legislation that would impose fines on strikers.
