As part of an initiative to make newcomers feel welcome on the many trails in Elgin county, two new signs were unveiled Tuesday at Springwater Conservation Area.
It’s a feature of the Trail Signs for Newcomers project, explains Catfish Creek Conservation Authority general manager Dusty Underhill.
The project – a partnership with the STEAM Education Centre – is funded through the Estate of Donna Vera Evans Bushell and the signs designed by students at Western University and Fanshawe College.
The students were tasked with prototyping a solution to make newcomers feel at home on the trails, taking into consideration local demographics, the messaging and the types of engagement that would be successful in creating an inclusive and welcoming space.
Denise Love of the STEAM Education Centre explains how the initiative came about.
Love adds additional signs are slated for St. Thomas Elevated Park.
The Springwater signs were designed by Fanshawe students Manuela Zuleta-Jimenez, originally from Columbia and Diego Contreras from El Salvador.
