Another major Ontario children’s hospital is reducing surgeries as it contends with surging admissions.
The Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre says it made the difficult decision as it reports daily visits to its emergency department are 80 per cent higher than usual and its inpatient beds are well over capacity.
The move late last week will allow teams to prioritize urgent, time-sensitive surgeries and help manage patients admitted to critical care and in-patient units.
The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and CHEO in Ottawa recently announced similar actions.
The pediatric health-care system across Canada has been grappling with overflowing E-Rs and I-C-Us linked to an early flu season, high rates of respiratory ailments and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
