Stressing we need more people living downtown, Doug Tarry recently gifted $500,000 toward Project Tiny Hope.
The undertaking will consist of a cluster of tiny homes and outdoor amenities on two acres of land at 21 Kains Street, the former home of Elgin Handles.
Lindsay Rice, executive director YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin tells myFM a local fundraising campaign wraps up at the end of the month.
The project is in conjunction with St. Thomas developer Doug Tarry and Sanctuary Homes.
Units in the project will be offered at deeply affordable and below-market rental rates.
Safe and stable housing is the foundation of a healthy and vibrant community, advises Rice.
She is now preparing a financial pitch to upper tier governments.
Rice stressed the project needs support from all levels of government in order to proceed to Phase 1 of construction.
While she completes those funding applications, Rice notes behind the scenes critical groundwork is being undertaken.
Rice adds these homes may be tiny but hold a big vision for the development of a stronger and more vibrant city.
