This Family Day, step back in time to the earliest years of the cycling craze in Elgin.
It’s the opening of Cycling: An Unspoken History at the Elgin County Heritage Centre.
Fifteen cycle models from the Rick Wolfe Collection will be on display at the centre, explains Mike Baker, curator with the County of Elgin.
Cycling has a long and colourful history in Elgin county, going back to formation of the Canadian Wheelmen’s Association in the 1880s.
Velocipedes, high wheels and safeties dating back to the 1860s will be on display during the exhibit.
Baker tells myFM a bit about cycling in this area.
It’s a way to get an early jump on cycling season with examples of cycles along with trophies, medals, posters and accessories like oil lamps, horns and costumes and a recreated repair shop.
Baker notes its an opportunity to promote cycling opportunities across the county.
And now being launched are virtual tours of the county, explains Baker.
Cycling: An Unspoken History runs through until the end of July at the Elgin County Heritage Centre, 460 Sunset Drive.
Open Family Day and then weekly Tuesday through Saturday.
