The YWCA St. Thomas Elgin will celebrate International Women’s Day March 8 in colourful fashion.
At that time the winning design in their mural project will be officially unveiled.
So as not to take away from that ceremony, just a portion of the mural wrap is shown above.
Entitled ‘A Brighter Future’, it is the work of St. Thomas artist Ann-Marie Cheung.
Melissa Kempf, YWCA communications officer manager, explains where the mural wrap has been applied.
Thirty years ago in Toronto, several of Cheung’s paintings were ordered removed from a shop window by Toronto Police after complaints by neighbours.
Something she called censorship of women.
Kempf tells myFM more about Cheung.
Late last year, the YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin put out the call for a mural design reflecting equity and diversity. The idea was to honour International Women’s Day and 120 years of YWCA service in the region.
Kempf says the winning design encompasses all of the objectives of the project.
The official unveiling of Cheung’s mural wrap will take place 3 p.m. March 8 in front of the YWCA at 16 Mary St.
