First announced in June of 2020, the new Belmont public school is to increase in size before ground has even been broken.
Originally to house 345 students, the province announced today (Friday) that will increase to 507 elementary students, with an additional $3.4 million in funding available.
The total investment is now $12.1 million.
Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Rob Flack noted when Education Minister Stephen Lecce was in London last fall, “we learned that the future Belmont elementary school would not have enough classroom capacity when opened.”
Flack added, he was appreciative the government responded “so quickly to alleviate this potential problem.”
Mark Fisher, director of education for the Thames Valley District School Board called it, “Great news for Thames Valley.”
The property is in the sixth phase of the Craigholme Estate subdivision on Concession 7, west of Belmont Road and had to be acquired through expropriation after a deal could not be reached with the developer.
A construction schedule has yet to be established.
