Ontario’s minimum wage is set to rise to 16-dollars and 55-cents an hour on October 1st, a 6.8 per cent increase from the current rate.
Labour Minister Monte McNaughton says the boost will go a long way toward helping people with the cost of living.
The minimum wage for Ontario students will also increase on October 1st, to 15-dollars and 60-cents an hour for those under 18 who work 28 hours a week or less.
Labour advocates and critics have said Ontario’s minimum wage should be higher — the Ontario Living Wage Network saying a living wage in the Greater Toronto Area is over 23-dollars an hour.
The living wage for St. Thomas and Elgin county for 2022 has been calculated at $18.05 an hour by Living Wage St. Thomas-Elgin which is associated with the YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin.
