An astronaut from London will become the first Canadian to venture into deep space.
Jeremy Hansen, a colonel and CF18 pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force, will be one of four astronauts who will steer the next stage of an ambitious plan to establish a long-term presence on the moon.
NASA and the Canadian Space Agency made the long-awaited announcement Monday. This historic crewed mission to the Moon, dubbed NASA’s Artemis II mission, will be the first since the end of the Apollo program 50 years ago.
The launch of Artemis II, expected to take place next year, will make Canada the second country to ever send an astronaut around the Moon. Artemis II will pave the way for humanity’s sustainable presence on the lunar surface and inspire a new generation of Canadians to join the thrill and excitement of space exploration and discovery.
The other three astronauts on the mission are all American.
