A unique way for parents and loved ones to celebrate the arrival of a new family member was unveiled Friday at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital.
A colourful mural now welcomes patients and visitors of the hospital’s Women & Children’s Unit and will soon be filled with custom “bubbles,” representing some of our community’s newest members.
Dubbed the “Born at STEGH” Wall, Tonya Sheldon, Interim Foundation Executive Director/Vice President & Chief Financial Officer at STEGH explains further.
The intention of “Born at STEGH” is to celebrate the babies delivered at our hospital, both past and present.
There is also the option to have a bubble purchased to memorialize the loss of a child, where wings will be added to the bubble. These bubbles will soar high up in the sky in memory of the babies who have passed on.
Olivia Mae Fox, daughter of Foundation Board Treasurer Brett Fox and Nora Jackson, daughter of STEGH Foundation Board Director Renee Vansevenant were the first two bubbles added to the wall during the unveiling Friday.
Sheldon says not only will this new initiative bring much needed funds to the Women & Children’s unit, but also some beauty.
Sheldon adds that a second mural was also painted on the 3rd floor, inviting families to stop for a photo op before leaving STEGH with their new bundle of joy.
The words “On our way” are displayed on the wall, with frosted glass and markers available to customize a baby’s name, birthweight and date.
