A short stretch of laneway in the city’s downtown core could close over the summer and be transformed into an arts and culture space.
C.J. Allen of Good Vibes Community Association is asking city council to authorize limiting the thoroughfare running east from city hall to St. Catharine Street to pedestrian traffic only.
The space could then be used for an outdoor bistro to host live music, a space for artisan vendors to sell their works and other cultural activities. Allen would like to see the lane closed from the May long weekend through to the end of Labour Day weekend.
If that is not feasible, he is asking council for permission to close it Friday and Saturday afternoons and evenings. Council will consider the matter at its meeting this Monday.
