May 20th to 26th is Safe Boating Awareness Week and with the warmer weather upon us, the Ontario Provincial Police are sending out reminders on how we can be more water safe this summer.
The OPP note that 29 people lost their lives in OPP-investigated marine incidents last year alone, with just two of the deceased wearing a lifejacket.
With capsized vessels and falling overboard the leading causes of boating fatalities every year, the life-saving value of wearing a lifejacket cannot be overstated they stress.
myFM recently spoke with Briar McCaw, Co-Chair The Elgin County Drowning Prevention Coalition who echoed the importance of lifejackets for both children and adults while out boating.
Another important tip is that whether you are a power boater or paddler, alcohol and drug consumption have no place on the water, as every year impaired operation of a vessel is a contributing factor in boating deaths.
It is also vital that boaters plan and prepare for any and all trips out on the water. Ensure you and your vessel are up for the type of water adventure you’re planning. Always check the weather forecast, make sure your vessel is in good working condition, have sufficient fuel, and a fully charged cell phone.
McCaw adds that simply telling someone when and where you are going could make all the difference in an emergency situation.
The OPP Marine Units will be out in full force this summer, with a fleet of 134 vessels and approximately 400 highly trained marine officers committed to enforcing boating laws and the safety of Ontario boaters on more than 110,000 square kilometres of Ontario’s lakes and rivers.
