A cottage-like feel.
That was the description provided to city council at its May 15 meeting as to what Hospice of Elgin will look and feel like.
It will not feel clinical, assured Laura Sherwood from Hospice of Elgin.
Construction of the 10-bed hospice is expected to begin his summer on city-owned land overlooking Waterworks Park.
The serene picture painted by Sherwood was the latest update on the to be owned and sponsored by St. Joseph’s Health Care Society.
She described the private suites that will touch 120 families every year.
Sherwood added hospice will include a palliative care hub, space for families, a staff and volunteer lounge and office space with 30 new jobs created.
The palliative care hub is expected to serve hundreds of individuals each year, advised Sherwood.
She continued, “The community has told us they are looking to have a strong connection to a natural environment, so you will see that cottage-like feel, where you have images of that timber structure, stone, lots of glass and connection to that natural environment.
“So, not only will trails be wrapped around the building for the community to access, but the space inside will also be there for residents, family and our community to use,” stressed Sherwood.
