The community of London is preparing for a vigil today, marking the second anniversary of the worst mass killing in its history.
Local leaders say the city has been transformed by the 2021 killing of four members of the Afzaal family, and the injuring of a fifth, as community members from across different faiths have become closer.
Salman Afzaal, 46, his wife Madiha Salman, 44, their 15-year-old daughter Yumna and her 74-year-old grandmother, Talat Afzaal, all tragically died after they were hit by a truck during an evening walk on June 6, 2021.
Prosecutors allege the attack was an act of terrorism targeting London’s Muslim community and Nathaniel Veltman, who was 20 at the time of his arrest, faces four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.
Organizers of the Tuesday evening vigil say the theme of the gathering will be “resilience” and Amira Elghawaby, Canada’s special representative on combatting Islamophobia, will be speaking with some other leaders.
